Upgrading to 500w

As I have already upgraded the graphics card 4850 last month. I actually was looking to upgrade the RAM. But I was fairly worried about the PSU(power supply unit) that I had in the system. I suspected that it was under powered with the 4850 drawing so much power.

So I went online and got me a Corsair CX500 for RM 225.00 excluding shipping.

I transferred the money to the seller on Friday. But he could not send it on Saturday as the postal services were off on the first Saturday of the month. So he sent it on Monday, and I recieved it yesterday just as I got home, POSLAJU also arrived. Good timing.

Sealed

This is a very basic PSU, with two years warranty.

Manual, power cable, cable ties, screws and a badge.

Sleeved mess.

Both sides has the CX500 sticker.

Rear of the PSU.

At the bottom of it was a large exhaust fan.

This was on the other side.

Comparing with what I had, I was pleasantly surprised that I got something half decent long ago. At least it was able to work the 4850. Without crashing or something sinister :P

Octopus mess.

At the end of it I had to swap out another casing which I happen to have lying about in my "tech" room. The other antique casing which I was using, the screw locations wrong. Which meant installing it backwards with the exhaust fan facing the roof of the casing. Lucky for me this casing I had had extra exhaust fan, which I have been meaning to install too. Totally forgot about it.

All in all RM spent, after two upgrades RM 430.00+

Upgrading to 4850

I have been playing L4D2 for a while now on my 20" iMac(2008) and sometimes on my dad's Core2Duo (2008). The iMac performs better interms of graphic but my room is at the edge of Wifi connectivity to the access point, I get high ping spikes quite often. On my dad's machine, the graphics has to be turned down way low to achieve playability. Still sometimes when the horde comes it still lags a fair bit.

This was when I decided to upgrade the graphics card. I figured that was the chokepoint. So asking my friends for recommendations (as I'm totally outdated with whats new and whats for computer parts). I was linked a used unit, which was being sold by someone in Kuching. After some nego we came to agree on a fair price and COD'ed this afternoon.

It may not be the latest and the greatest but it still can very comfortably allow me to play L4D2 at near maximum detail. That was really something, used to play the game in lowest possible setting.

Dual DVI

Comparing with my old Radeon x1650. There was a serious increase in size of the board and the cooling system. The fan on the 4850 is pretty high pitched. I guess its been used a fair bit. But its still acceptable, I just had to close the casing. Normally I would leave it open so I can have easy access if I needed it.

My old casing. I could not find the front of it. Anyways, one of my concern of the 4850 is the power drain. If memory serves, it drains nearly 50w of power when its on load. And it might just fry my el cheapo power supply. The system did for no reason freeze a bit once in a while when I played 2 hours of L4D2 just now. But it did not crash or anything of the sort.

One thing tho, the card is hot. Litterally. When touching the casing just at the area where the 4850 was installed, it was more than warm. But the top of the casing was cool, so I guess it was ok. Since there are holes everywhere to vent out the hot air.

This was the old score according to Windows7 score.

This screenshot was after the new hardware was tested. Note that the Graphics and Gaming graphics subscore increased about 3 points each! Making the whole system half decent. Wait, what's the maximum can the components score?

Anyways I think it was worth the performance increase. I may have to swap in a larger capacity power supply, but will deal with that when I reach that point. Not bad for a under RM 200 deal. So starts my uber cheap upgrades, next maybe more RAM. Hopefully can score some cheap used RAM! Muahaha!

upgrades

Its like a never ending cycle. Ever since I got my first computer in 1992. I have been upgrading it every two-three years. And each time it would cost about RM 2,000 to upgrade. Last year I finally got pissed at the troublesome windows platform and decided to jump into MacOS.

LGA775

My dad was getting all my left overs from my various upgrades over the years. And recently he kept complaining that the computer was very slow. Yeah, I know. I had two sticks of 512MB rams, and one died. So performance was not as good as previously.

He kept asking me to upgrade his pc for him. So finally about two weeks ago. After finding out the price I helped him to do an upgrade. This time it only cost just slightly over RM 1,000.

Which was pretty cheap! I got him a new processor, main board, ram, hard disk, display card, power supply, and dvd burner. It turns out I was quite out dated. I didn’t realize the previous processor my dad was using was a Celeron with LGA775 socket. The main board which I used was condemn therefore I bought the Celeron processor for him. And I didnt notice that the pins were no longer there! In the past the pins were on the processor. Where people always say it was made of gold and some people ‘harvest’ it for the gold. DOH!

I only realize the pins were gone. Doh!

The brand spanking new intel e5200 pentium dual core slay7 malay 2.5 ghz 2m 800 06. (try saying that 5 times quickly)

LGA775

Looking back at the junk (leftovers) I have 6 hard disks (40GB 2x, 120GB 2x, 320GB 2x), 1 CDROM, 2 DVD burner, 3 dead mother boards (unstable) 2 processors, extra fans, heaps of cables, 2x 17” CRT, 3 keyboards, few mice. I must clear out all the junk one of these days.
