Chasing Sunrise

11.04.2012 Its been a long time since I headed off for sunrise shooting. I think the last time I did it was probably 2-3 years ago. When there were plans to go sunrise shooting at Telaga Air, I jumped at the chance to join in.

This was probably 5 mins or less before actual sunrise. HDR photo.

Im not usually a fan of HDR, but when the situation calls for it, why not. I like to mix up my photography, not DIE HARD ONE STYLER.

Trying different look. Burnt look. Very strange.

Misty looking.

Feels very calm.

Even without using HDR, I think one single raw can create quite nice images.

A lot of people think this is a HDR image. Well I guess you can consider that it is an image with fake HIGH DYNAMIC RANGE. Its created from single RAW file in Adobe Lightroom 4. Raising the clarity and vibrance, pushing the shadows and pulling the highlights. I was pretty intrigued with the end result myself.

A friend had brought along a 800mm Samyang Mirror lens. The moon was still up at 630 am so we had to shoot it :)

Not only that, we had to bring it forward xD. Its a feature called Multi-Exposure. Both my Nikon's had this feature, and I always had fun time fooling around with them.  Normally I would only multi-expose twice. But for that morning I decided to multi-expose 3 frames. Two frames on the Nikkor 80-200mm lens and the last one on the Tamrom 11-16mm. Writting this and looking at it now, I realize something is a miss in the photo. Interesting. Obviously this can also be done in post process, but it is always fun to be able to do it in camera.

It is amazing how fast the scene changes by the minute. The skies are alive!

Friends: Chze, James, Desmond, and Foosi. (L-R)

Alex's ride doing some rallying hehe.

Just opposite the spot where we were shooting the sun rise from, was a patch of burnt earth. I guess the locals were clearing it to plant something or to build something in the space.

Dead trees.

charchoaled ground.

Road leads to Telaga Air.

After packing up all our gears, we decide to head towards Telaga Air to grab something to eat. And Desmond decided to share his SOY MILK with my hand, sun glasses, shoes and my shirt. Oh and on his phone too. Foosi was too busy eating to care.

Photo shot by Alvin

Im testing my fakeDR processing. Jee, Alvin looks so old. Maybe thats what he looks like in 20 years time.

Chze's daughter killing Foosi's shutter. James looks on at Foosi's expression :)

After filling our tummies, we walked over to the jetty.

Found a cat statue. :)

resting.

So we packed our things and headed back. Started our journey at 430 am. Completed it at 800am. It feels good to shoot some landscape. Feels like it has been ages since I have shot any.

20090101 Sunrise (Buntal)

Finally the first posting about of 2009 on 2009!

HAHAHA!

I woke up around 3am to pick up the people from MV Doulos, who were following us to try and catch the first sunrise of 2009 at Buntal. All in all 3 cars went to pick them up. I volunteered to help of course. Stephen and Micheal was there to help also. Alex and the others were somewhere else at another meeting point. We drove directly up to Buntal and waited for everyone to arrive.

When everyone had gathered, it seemed like a huge group of people. Well, cos it was! Check out the group photo which we took at the end when we left Buntal.

Image was taken from Alex's site.

When everyone was ready to go off, we realised that the water was too high. We could not really get to the edge of the water. Which was quite dissapointing. The rubbish at the kamping was really to much as well. There were broken glasses and rubbish all over the place.

But we enjoyed ourselves. A lot.

Here are some shots of the people who went :)~

After about 2 hours plus of sun hunting, we were tired (sleepy) and hungry. So we headed off to Golden Arch food court to have our late breakfast. It was kind of a mess as we arrived in batches and everyone was ordering food & drinks left right and center. The waiter was so busy. Everytime he delivered some drinks someone else ordered some more. hehe~more pics at my multiply page.

Here are a few shots at the place~

Sunday outing

It was an impromptu decision by Alex and a few other guys to go buntal to try and catch the sunrise on Friday nite. Interestingly the night prior (sat nite) I could not sleep. I tried to sleep, but I ended up just laying in bed wide awake. By 2am. I was quite restless as I know this will a very tiring day. AND I purposely went to play badminton on Saturday evening to tire myself out so I could sleep early. So I got up at 2am in the morning, I had to be up at 4 am to get ready, so I watched Jack Blacks movie called Be Kind Rewind. It was a silly movie, nothing to shout about, but it helped me pass the time. By 3.30 am I finally was feeling tired, then I got a SMS from Derbe, "its raining now is the trip still on?" Just as my whole body relaxed and was about to have a good rest.

So by 4am my alarm went off, I climbed out of bed prepared my gear, and was out of the door by 4.30am. Picked Derbe and Ru, then headed off to the meeting place. And what do you know, met James and William having breakfast there. Stephen and Cecilia were there already. About 5mins later Alex, Micheal, Methos, and Alvin arrived. So all of us went up. And Micheal a good driver that he was, stayed below 60kph all the way up to Buntal village. -.- (he drove the same speed when coming down as well).

When we reached the location it was raining and was cloudy. Again we met up with William and James there. They were there with other photographers. To cut the story short, we were quite disappointed that there was no sunrise, but we tired our best. We still went ahead to find things to shoot as soon as the rain stopped.

An hour after the rain stopped it started again, forcing all of us to seek shelter at a coffee shop nearby. We had coffee and ate Derbe's sandwich breakfast(thanks Derbe, your a life saver). After warming ourselves up a bit with hot beverages we were all talking photography. Then Alex started to play with his camera, I borrowed his fish eye lens, and then everyone else picked up their camera and were moving about to find things to shoot. Ru found a lot of subjects as more and more people came in for their morning coffee.

By 9am plus the rain ceased and we headed out again for second rounds! After about an hour we called it quits. And headed down to Lu Lai Vegetarian Restaurant.

+A quick video 12 min video clip taken with the Nokia n96. Shredded down to about 1 mins worth of video, added soundtrack and credits and intro. Enjoy+

After lunch I came back home, transfer all the pictures to the computer, took a shower, rested a bit and then had high tea at McDonalds, and headed off to the Spring, to try and catch Serene in her cosplay costume with her friends. Called up Allen, he came, Derbe came along as well so we were there trying to flash each other silly. Then a quick dinner at Hui Sing, and back HOME!

Ah.. time to rest and pack. Flying to KL tomorrow for work. So no photo updates till after August. Because right after KL, I'll be headed down to Bintulu and Miri.

I think I'll have a good's night sleep tonight.
