My Apple iMac died

So last Thursday, after finishing up a photo assignment, I came home about midnight, very tired. Showered and wanted to check emails for a while, only to find that the computer was not responding. It was warm to the touch. At first I thought that there was a power outage, maybe the power supply was cut and the computer didn't reboot. I pressed the start button, after a while, I was greeted not with the familiar Apple logo, but in its place was a folder icon with a question mark on it. Being the first time encountering this situation, I was quite curious, thinking to myself maybe the boot sector or something got corrupted and it could not find the hard disk, or it could be a physical problem.

First time opening up my iMac.

Portable Memory

Last year I bought a portable USB flash drive, 4gb for about RM105.00. This year I bought 16GB for RM 110.00! Triple the capacity. (shortly after I bought the 16GB I lost the 4GB =(( )

HP USB Flash drive v210w 16 GBI found it really good looking and probably the coolest looking flash memory I have ever bought.

me likes shinny stuffRear … simple… I was wondering how do you ‘work’ the device. Aparantly after two mins of fondling it. I realise you just plug it into the USB port. heh~ Simple. I love it!!

I didn’t know what got into me, I also purchased another external hard disk. I had the Maxtor Basic Portable 320GB which I never filled up. Yet I bought the WD MY PASSPORT ESSENTIAL- 500GB hard disk for RM 323.00.

comparing the HDD to Nokia e63its pretty thin I must sayMaxtor vs WDYikes! Big difference! So far I have used less than 100GB hahah mostly to transfer media files about from my NAS. to my iMac … to the 1TB external drive.

But I love my 16GB flash drive. Bring it everywhere I go everyday!

upgrades

Its like a never ending cycle. Ever since I got my first computer in 1992. I have been upgrading it every two-three years. And each time it would cost about RM 2,000 to upgrade. Last year I finally got pissed at the troublesome windows platform and decided to jump into MacOS.

LGA775

My dad was getting all my left overs from my various upgrades over the years. And recently he kept complaining that the computer was very slow. Yeah, I know. I had two sticks of 512MB rams, and one died. So performance was not as good as previously.

He kept asking me to upgrade his pc for him. So finally about two weeks ago. After finding out the price I helped him to do an upgrade. This time it only cost just slightly over RM 1,000.

Which was pretty cheap! I got him a new processor, main board, ram, hard disk, display card, power supply, and dvd burner. It turns out I was quite out dated. I didn’t realize the previous processor my dad was using was a Celeron with LGA775 socket. The main board which I used was condemn therefore I bought the Celeron processor for him. And I didnt notice that the pins were no longer there! In the past the pins were on the processor. Where people always say it was made of gold and some people ‘harvest’ it for the gold. DOH!

I only realize the pins were gone. Doh!

LGA775

Looking back at the junk (leftovers) I have 6 hard disks (40GB 2x, 120GB 2x, 320GB 2x), 1 CDROM, 2 DVD burner, 3 dead mother boards (unstable) 2 processors, extra fans, heaps of cables, 2x 17” CRT, 3 keyboards, few mice. I must clear out all the junk one of these days.
