My Apple iMac died

So last Thursday, after finishing up a photo assignment, I came home about midnight, very tired. Showered and wanted to check emails for a while, only to find that the computer was not responding. It was warm to the touch. At first I thought that there was a power outage, maybe the power supply was cut and the computer didn't reboot. I pressed the start button, after a while, I was greeted not with the familiar Apple logo, but in its place was a folder icon with a question mark on it. Being the first time encountering this situation, I was quite curious, thinking to myself maybe the boot sector or something got corrupted and it could not find the hard disk, or it could be a physical problem.

First time opening up my iMac.

Switch's Grand Launch

Switch has been a tenant at the Spring for a few years now. Yesterday they officially moved into their new location which was better and bigger.

The new location is just next to MPH bookstore

Rose extended the invitation to me from Switch to attend the openning of the store. Just a brief about the store. Besides the big bump in real estate (and rental) the store's status has changed. Previously it had Apple Authorized Reseller (AAR) status which allowed them to carry a selected amount of Apple hardware & software. Now, they have been upgraded to Apple Premium Reseller (APR). Besides providing a full range of Apple products, there is also a training room, where they could provide classes for customers to help them familiarize themselves with their Apple product, and a service centre. A service center is VERY IMPORTANT. My friend's who are using Apple products normally bring their gadgets to Singapore to get it serviced. Hopefully the service here is good and does not cost a bomb. So far my iMac '08 is still alive and kicking. I hope I do not need to visit the service center :P.

Switch is 1 of 4 Apple Service Providers in Malaysia, which means it is the only one in East Malaysia. \o/

Now for the actual event. Kinda start at around 10am. While we (bloggers) slowly appeared. Trickling in by around 11.30am.

There were quite a number of people there when we arrived. Everyone's kinda excited about the new store. It was alright for me, as there were not much I have not seen. Except the OS X Lion, which I have not upgdaded to.

Bloggers taking a look at one new Apple iMac's. Whats put so much smile on their faces? (see next picture)

Aha~ it was Photobooth. Always fun!

I kind of like how they used the space. I think its better utilized than the previous tenant.

This is a very important shelf. hehe! Apple Care packs!

Moshi Moshi~ hehe whats this?

Its a handset ! for your mobile phone. While its kinda cute, I think it kind of defeats the purpose of going WIRELESS.

Many other designs and colors to choose from.

It was around noonish when the emcee started. With quizies and prizes for those who answered correctly.

There were two games which the general public can attend. Namely the Fruit Ninja competition and the treasure hunt. While waiting for the event to start, we mingled and tested out the offerings.

MS Fanboys & Apple store

I was browsing the interweb and came across an interesting video. Check it out.

.wav from .wav on Vimeo.

If you do not get it, the guys are actually sticking the windows logo onto an Apple Store in Hamburg, Germany. I found that quite amusing. The prank was done by Microsoft fanboys.

Wouldnt it be funny if Windows users were bought to the apple store and actually bought Apple products?

Moshi. Moshi. Another day

Here are some updates to what have happened. After previous pissed off posting. I proceeded to email amazon.com regarding this issue. And last night I got a reply saying that they will exchange all the books for me. I guess I’ll have to pay for the shipping from here to US. And they will cover the return round. I guess its better than nothing.

On another note, I got moshi.

Was introduced by Jeffrey Sia to this amazing product. I got it in anticipation of the MBP which I purchased last week on 12 October 2009. I purchased it online and it is expected to arrive at my house estimated on the coming Friday.

But as you can see, it has reached Kuching on 19th October 2009. Actually I noticed the tracking yesterday that it has already reached Malaysia on 18th October 2009.

So I was out with Desmond this afternoon and I got a call from an unknown caller who said he was from DHL and was in front of my house already. o.O I jumped and rushed hope to recieve the package. LOL!

After inspecting the box and recieving it I rushed up to the room and open up the box. :D I would like to share some of the exciting moments below :P

:) and I’m now at Desmond’s place, needed to grab some software and so I’m posting from here ^__^ woo.. at least some good news amongst the bad news :)

shrunken trunks or me?

Shrunken trunks.

heh~ yesterday I went for a swim with Stephen at Stampark. Have not been swimming for at least 6 months. And when I put on my trunks, it felt loose. Hmm… Didn’t think much of it. So got into the water, and realise its really loose. After a lap~ I realise it was not the trunks which were the problem it was me.

In December 08, I caught a bug, which got me coughing for about a month. And I lost a lot of weight. About 6-7 kg worth of fat. Where at the end of the sickness, my jeans were falling off when I do not use a belt.

I thought it was just my waist that got smaller… Didn’t realise my thighs also got smaller. o.O” the reason I came to the conclusion is because my swimming trunks were just nice fit at the thighs. Now, its about 2cm gap. Didn’t really dare to swim much as I was scared my privates came out for a breather. >.<

The best part was when I got out of the pool, the back end of the trunks were loose too…… LOL… I feel like a kid who have worn someone else’s trunks! ROFL!

No more trunks for me till I put back some of the weight!

Okay enuf about the embarassing outing of mine yesterday.

Today I finally took my Mighty Mouse to IT Fusion. My mouse have refused to scroll down few weeks ago. After searching on the net for a while. It appeared that this was a very common problem. Apple had built their mouse, NOT to be serviced.

Here is the official page from apple on how to clean the Mighty Mouse.

If your Mighty Mouse is covered in fingerprints or its surface has become soiled, it can be gently wiped with a clean lint-free cloth. If necessary, moisten the cloth using only water, making sure not to over saturate it. Be aware that the mouse contains electronic components that may be damaged if water drips from the cloth into the mouse via the seam around the scroll ball or around its underside.

The same procedure can be used to clean the scroll ball on your Mighty Mouse if it has become discolored or dirty. Use a clean lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water. Wipe the ball and the surrounding area, making sure to rotate the ball itself to ensure complete coverage. If the scrolling feels rough or if the scroll ball isn’t scrolling up, down, or side-to-side, hold the mouse upside-down and roll the ball vigorously while cleaning it to help dislodge any particles that may have collected on the internal hardware.

For a QuickTime movie demonstration, click here (the movie is approximately 600 KB).

Well apple… it does not work! Do a search online for “mighty mouse cleaning” and you will find there are many frustrated users like me.

And the most common solution out there is to crack the mouse open. But by doing so, the mouse would have to be re-glued back together again. As its by design NOT to be serviced.

Anyways the kind folks at IT Fusion cracked my mouse open and gave it a wipe and now its clean. I’m waiting for the super glue to set back in before I use it. *cant wait*

The mice on the left is mine, reassembled.

Today they had to “rescue” 3 mice from the dustbin. Thanks guys. Much appreciated.

[ps] In case your wondering what mice I was using during my miceless weeks… I was using my thrusty Microsoft Intelli Explorer 3.0!
